Neil Armstrong Handwritten Address AND the PEN he used to write it. The story behind all this is...
Neil Armstrong Handwritten Address AND the PEN he used to write it. The story behind all this is long and involved. It is fully discussed in the August 1999 issue of American Heritage magazine (included). The short version of the story is that a 17 year old prospective Eagle Scout, Ken Dayton, was working toward his Space Exploration badge, but was disappointed when his Troop leader informed him that there were no certified counselors to sign off on it. His leader sarcastically suggested he get an astronaut to be his counselor. Dayton drove 150 miles through Ohio, directly to Armstrong's farm and requested his services as a counselor, and was amazed when Armstrong accepted. For 30 minutes, Dayton gave his presentation in Armstrong's driveway. Upon finishing, Armstrong asked Dayton to send all his finished materials to his office at the University for his final review. This he did and his Scout leader received a typed letter, on University of Cincinnati letterhead, some time letter in which Armstrong said, in part: "...I am not a certified counselor and cannot legally affirm Mr. Dayton's competence...In my opinion, he has completed all requirements satisfactorily. I an enclosing his work for your examination should you desire before signing his application.". He has signed the letter with his full name as Professor of Aerospace Engineering. Included in this lot are 1) a piece of note paper on which Armstrong wrote his address so Dayton could send his papers (with Dayton's notation at the bottom attesting its authenticity, 2) the PEN with which he wrote the address (as noted in the authentication, 3) two color pictures of Armstrong taken at his farm by Dayton. One of the pictures (5x3.5') is inscribed and signed: "Best Wishes to Ken Dayton (signed) Neil Armstrong", 4) the aforementioned typed letter in which Armstrong states that Dayton has earned his Space Exploration badge and 5) the American Heritage magazine in which all this is discussed. This unique group of material will be of interest to anyone interested in Scouting, Autographs, Space Memorabilia, or history. An important lot. Estimate: $ 3,500 - 5,000
