American antique needlepoint cross stitch sampler in gold painted frame. Jane Knowles, the young creator of this sampler, seems to be unencumbered by discipline. Her fanciful sense of design shows the alphabet in rather random order, mixed with a number traditional American symbols. The rich symbolism includes a dog (fidelity), dove (charity), falcon (nobility), lion (strength), swan (love, purity) and Eve picking an apple from a tree with seven apples (early American symbolism for the seven deadly sins). She also includes various flowering plants, all having their unique meaning. The predominant thread color is dark forest green, gold/ochre and some beige. Pennsylvania German samplers were usually created under rigorous oversight as part of school coursework during the 19th century. The girl's English name, the aged coloration, and the whimsical design might suggest that this is earlier than the German samplers of the 19th century. Silk on linen. Typical yellowing for its age. Frame has a number of wear marks consistent with its age. See photos for details. 11 1/2" x 12 1/4".
Calculate shipping and insurance.
Possibly early 19th century or earlier.
