Nearly Complete Large Cent Collection, 1793-1857
This 63-coin Large Cent collection is housed in a deluxe Whitman album and lacks only a genuine 1793 cent and the key date 1799. Filling the 1793 hole is a vintage electrotype Chain cent--not to be confused with some of the more modern reproductions--and has a value of approximately $400. The 2007 EAC auction included many early electros and they fetched healthy bids. Most of the coins are problem-free and pleasing examples.

Highlights of the collection are as follows: A nice 1794 Flowing Hair cent in G4 or better; an 1804 cent in AG, easily authenticated by the obverse and reverse die breaks representative of Breen Die State IV; a pleasing 1798 cent which displays choice, glossy surface and attractive coloration; an above average 1813 Classic Head; and a light chocolate-brown 1857 cent in VF, but with a few small reverse rim cuts (see images). The 1801 is nice, but there's an attempted hole at 12 o'clock on the obverse, and the 1811/10 has impact damage. A few other coins have small problems.

The balance of the set is pleasing with a few surprises within. For example, the 1817 is the 15 Star variant, and some of the late dates are problem-free VF to EF. if each coin were priced according to the CDN Greysheet, this set would total close to $4,000. Due to time constraints, we have not attributed any coins in the album, and the high bidder will have many hours of enjoyment examining each piece with the possibility of finding a better variety or two.
