Near Atlanta.... Soldier's letter, Aug. 4, 1864, from Wm. King, to his wife, 8 pp., on Sherman's March to the Sea. "...We are now in a position that we can hardly escape without going down fighting...We moved our regiment day before yesterday...to the right and have gone into breastworks. They are swinging the army to the right and south of the city. Yesterday evening we had a pretty hard fight to our left about 2 miles. Last evening the Rebs gave us and our immediate neighbor a smart shelling...I have had them drop and explode very close to me...They have their breastworks so constructed that they are pretty safe from shells...I had to move my quarters last night...The ground was wet and I had nothing but my rubber blanket and woolen blanket. We are all getting very tired of this campaign, and hope it will be over, but the 'Johnnies' seem to fight for every inch of ground and it may last some time yet...." Professionally encapsulated. About fine. With typed transcript.
