Nazi Gunner's Notebook. Highly unusual item:
Nazi Gunner's Notebook. Highly unusual item: a bound notebook of a German gunner, including hand drawings of planes and ships. 6 1/2 x 8 3/4 , about 26 pp. filled with manuscript notes (in German) and 18 pp. with artwork, the scribe believed a Nazi sailor, possibly a coastal defense gunner attached as crewman manning a 15cm S.K. C28 cannon (this gun is mentioned throughout). Silhouette drawings, variously in pencil and ink, of British, French, and German aircraft and warships, meant to guide the gunner in determining whether a target was friend or foe. All types of views are drawn: wing designs, frontal views, smokestack arrangements, engine placement, fuselage design, and more, including examples of ME 109, Wellington, JU 52 and 87, Hudson, He 111, BV 222, and various cruisers and destroyers. Many of the planes drawn are World War I-type, still in service. Text penned in a bold, clear hand, key portions underlined in red pencil using a ruler; most drawings in broad pencil. When opened from back cover and rotated, another approx. 50 pp. bear extensive text entries, mostly in pencil, untranslated but presumed military content and possibly of considerable interest. Leaves preprinted with a fine grey and red engineering grid, flexible black leatherette over boards. Covers worn from use, uniform toning of text, else good. Fascinating.
