A variation on the 1935 pattern helmet, the 1942 eliminated the vent hole grommets and rolled outer edges in order to speed the manufacturing process. The underside of the helmet is marked "hkp64/ 3792" at the rear. The camouflage on this helmet appears to be a soldier-implemented field modification, with the coarse webbing secured in place by the inner liner, and the camouflage material being a section of "Heeressplittermuster 31" (Army Splinter Pattern, 1931) fabric cut to fit. Splinter 31 was introduced for use by the Reichswehr, and though replaced by other patterns for uniform camouflage, remained in use for production of Zeltbahn (shelter quarters), which were often used as a material source for improvised camouflage.
