JAMES PAULDING. LS. 1pp. 8" x 10". Navy Department. March 3rd 1841. A letter signed "J K Paulding" as Secretary of the Navy one day before President Van Buren's term expired. Paulding informed "Acting Midshipman William Whittemore Low" that he was "...hereby appointed an Acting Midshipman in the Navy of the United States & if your commanding officer shall, after six months of actual service at sea, report favourably [sic] of your character, talents and qualifications, a Warrant will be given to you...I enclose a description of the uniform, and the requisite oath, the latter, when taken and subscribed, you will transmit to this Department...". It is in fine condition overall.
