Naval Medical Research Institute 8x10" Black & White Publicity Photos lot of seven different, mainly to do with the June 1959 visit of the Mercury 7 astronauts to the Research Institute to undergo testing by Dr. Stein to determine their resistance to carbon dioxide buildup in the space capsule. Dr. Stein was the Head of the Submarine and Diving Medicine Branch of the Naval Research Institute and it was felt that the atmospheric conditions in a submarine approximated what would develop in a space capsule. The astros obviously passed the test. This is a striking group of photos that are not in general circulation.
