Navajo Yei Rug
Navajo Yei Rug
Circa 1930
Length 56 1/2 in. Width 80 in.

This pictorial weaving features a central cornstalk motif flanked by four Yei figures holding feathers in each hand and wearing necklaces, earrings, and concho belts. "The Ye'ii tapestry is popular among tourists because of its symbolic content. While not sacred in themselves, and not used by the Navajo in rituals, such tapestries are copies of figures seen in Navajo sand paintings. The latter are compositions drawn by medicine men with colored sand and other dry materials, which are used when curing the sick. The sand paintings must be destroyed the same day, which is why some weavers are sensitive about re-creating their images."

Imp
