J. B. Moore: In 1897, J. B. Moore purchased a trading post in the Chuska mountains of New Mexico, renamed it “Crystal” and remained in business there until 1911. During that time, he worked with the Navajo weavers to improve the design and wool quality of their rugs. Part of this process was sending the raw wool to a commercial scouring plant for preparation. This process resulted in an extraordinary quality of wool for weaving. Once returned, the wool, now referred to as “Crystal Wool,” was given to the best weavers to hand card, hand spin and hand dye, thus producing the finest rugs. Moore also revolutionized the distribution of the weavings by producing a “catalog” from which buyers could place orders. Lot 628 is such a weaving and shows the use of the commercially scoured “crystal” wool. This is a near exact catalog-ordered weaving from the 1911 J.B. Moore catalog as plate # XX.
