Navajo Third Phase Chief's Pattern Large Rug
This is an original 20th Century Navajo Native American Indian hand knotted wool rug in a scarce Third Phase Chief’s Blanket Pattern. The piece shows an excellent design and manufacture with delightful mineral dyed colors in red, white, dark brown, and grey. The rug shows a large size with three bands along each end with three sets of three diamond/half diamond symbols each having a red cross in the center of a storm pattern. The rug shows a good overall condition with some repaired areas. Early to Mid 20th Century rug. Chief’s Patter Blankets are of the most desired patterns with circa 19th Century examples commanding over 1.5 million at auction. Noted archeologist and Navajo weaving authority Joe Ben Wheat once wrote, “The Chief’s blanket is one of the finest achievements in Navajo weaving.” The blanket rug is in a very scarcely seen large size and is very finely crafted showing an exceptional pattern. Measures overall 79" x 60 1/2".
