Navajo Saddle Blanket Hand Woven Rug c. 1930's
Featured in this lot is this Navajo saddle blanket hand woven rug circa 1930's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a off white field with bands of faded and naturally dyed red along with heathered grey and shows Lazy Lines throughout the saddle blanket. Navajo weavers have been producing numerous examples of Saddle Blankets from around 1880 to the present. These types of Blankets have also been used as Rugs for many years. Single Saddle Blankets are usually about thirty inches square. Double Saddle Blankets are meant to be folded in half, and are about thirty by sixty inches. A good portion of the Saddle Blankets were woven using a twill weave because it is stronger and thicker. Good Navajo Saddle Blankets used as a saddle blanket last in excess of 30 years. The condition of this Navajo saddle blanket shows some fading to the naturally dyed colors and some wear to that body of the blanket with holes from that wear. The measurements of this saddle blanket is 62" x 27 1/2".
