Navajo Germantown Thunderbird Motif Rug c. 1880's
Featured in this lot is this Navajo Germantown Thunderbird motif rug circa 1880's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows a extremely tightly woven weave that includes a stepped field design with motif's of animals and Thunderbird motifs with some small figures at the bottom of the rug. The rug features the traditional Germantown fringe that is added after the rug is woven. These intricately styled and often colorful rugs were so aptly named because the yarn that they came from was produced in the now suburb of Philadelphia called—you guessed it—Germantown. One of the most unique and compelling aspects of Germantown rugs is that the fringe is added only after the rug has been woven. The condition of this Navajo rug is good with a crack in the glass of the frame but otherwise shows good overall well preserved condition. The measurements of this framed rug is 39 1/2" x 27 1/2" and the visible rug measures 30" x 16 1/2". Provenance: originally from the Benzau Trading Company (comes complete with the original tag)
