Descended from a long line of Navajo medicine men, including the famous Hosteen Klah, Eugene began receiving formal instruction in Navajo sandpainting and religion at age 10 from his father, James C. Joe. Though he has never received any art training in school, he has developed his own unique style and become widely recognized as an outstanding young artist, having taken many awards for his work since he first entered competition in 1968.
