An extra-large sterling silver and turquoise concho belt with 10 individual conchos. Each concho is a 3.5 x 4” silver oval with a fluted incised design and an oval matrix turquoise stone at center. Two hand-soldered copper brackets on the reverse of each hold the belt in place. The belt is black leather, new, and marked XL. Overall length is 49.” Concho—or concha—belts (from the Spanish word for shell) were developed in 2nd half of the 19th century along with the rise of silversmithing among the Navajo. Worn by both men and women traditionally over a blouse or shirt, they were worn primarily by Navajo and Zuni people, then by Hopis and others. This is a stunning and dramatic piece. - HKA#65184
