Navajo Third Phase Chief's Pattern Rug
Circa 1920
Length 51 in. Width 74 in.

The design pattern on this rug is a variant of the classic third phase chief's blanket. It is woven in both natural and aniline dyed wool. The rug is characterized by three horizontal bands of diamond elements, the large diamonds filled in with smaller stepped diamonds and crosses, done in navy blue, green, red, and orange, and alternating with plain bands of white and brown homespun yarn. This style of regional weaving is known as a Red Mesa Outline in reference to the location and the treatment of design elements.

Provenance
Collected by a teacher at the He Dog School on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota during the 1920s.
Larry Ness, Yankton, South Dakota.
