NATIVE GOLD CRYSTALS
Red Ledge Mine, Washington District, Nevada County, California
A fine example of one of the rarer forms that native gold can display.
When conditions are right in certain high-grade gold deposits the metal can actually form sharp crystals, usually of octahedral habit. In the case of this specimen, the crystal growth was limited by the narrow fissure it took place in. Since there was no room to grow freely in three dimensions, most of the growth took place laterally giving the branching, dendritic aggregate of octahedrons a flattened appearance. The Red Ledge Mine, now closed, was one of the few producers of this rare, crystalline variety of metallic gold.
Further production from this historic mine is not anticipated. This bright, lustrous specimen measures 1 ½ x 5/8 inch. It weighs 2.98 grams.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
