Native American Trade Silver Shirt Brooch. Circa 1750, Colonial Era, handmade, highly ornate and beautifully designed Silver brooch, in the style of 1750, and measures 2.5" in circumference. It features engraved designs surrounded by a row of half moons and raised dots and retains its original silver-gray surfaces. This type of large brooch was often traded among the Native American Indians including their handicrafts, blankets, and beadwork. This exceptional specimen is in excellent condition, having its original silver pinback still attached and fully in place. Very similar in design to other examples that are illustrated in the major reference work, Silver in the Fur Trade 1680-1820 by Martha Hamilton. An outstanding, high quality specimen that has obviously been very well cared for by prior collectors and as such, remains a superb example today.
