Native American Stone-Headed War Club

Measuring 22 1/2 inches in overall length, this club is fitted with a 7 inch long oval stone striker, which was polished down to have a pair of rounded points and installed on a wooden shaft with full coverage hide wrapping, possibly buffalo, with a small section of black fur still visible at the base of the shaft. Notes supplied by the consignor state that the club was discovered during a building renovation near Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois; Arsenal Island was originally a sacred site to the Sauk Indians, as well as the location of Fort Armstrong, the U.S. Army headquarters during the Black Hawk War in 1832. Of note, over a half dozen weapons are on display at the museum at Rock Island Arsenal that are documented as being in the Custer Battle. They were seized from Sioux Indians as well as many other items.

Very fine. The head is a bit chipped on the ends, and the hide wrapping is very dry but solidly mounted.
