Native American Paleo Indian splinter, trigger animal bone ( most likely deer ) awl tool. 7" L X 1 3/4" W. Comes with museum display case. From a Native American Indian collection in South Carolina. Bone Awls are found at most archaeological sites and were in use throughout all prehistoric periods. Splinter awls are made from bone splinters that were sharpened at one end but remain otherwise without modification. They vary from 3 to 7 inches in length and were generally used to perforate softer materials such as animal hide skins, but may have also been used in making baskets or other types of weaving. Â
