Native American Padre Bead Necklaces Green
Presented in this lot are five (5) individual strands of Native American Padre Bead necklaces, Green in colour. Strung with very sturdy natural fiber, Padre beads are glass beads whose origin is traced back to ancient China. Taken to America, Africa, and India by traders during the 18th and the 19th century. Padre beads were made in a variety of colors, but blue and white were the most sought after by the Northwest Indians, but were only two of many styles and colors accepted for trade among the Native Americans. The name by which these beads have become known, 'padre' originates from the Franciscan priests (padres) who gave the beads to Native Americans for their good work and to convert them to Christianity. In the late 18th century, these beads spread rapidly in use in Southwest and Northwest America, following the trading patterns of Russian and Spanish traders. In 1778, English explorer, Captain James Cook made the earliest mention of these beads with several references to the effect that it was difficult to obtain supplies and furs from the Pacific coast Indians without this particular blue bead. These Padre Bead necklaces are in good condition, measure 12"L approximately each.
