c1875 This small photograph measures 4” x 2.5” mounted on white mat. Medium contrast and focus is sharp. There are brown age marks that appear on the left and upper right sides. The sides of the mat have little wear. On the back on the mat there is a message in period handwriting that reads “Digger Indian.” It is therefore unknown the tribal group the man in the photograph was associated with. The term “digger Indian” was created by Euro Americans as a generalized stereotypical definition loosely applied to Natives whom they believe dug for food. Therefore, the term was applied to many Northern Nevadan and Central Californian Natives, despite their cultural differences. The man sits for a photograph in a chair, holding a stick. He is barefooted and wears Euro American clothing. [Ref: Lonnberg, Allan. “The Digger Indian Stereotype in California”, Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology, p. 215. 1981]. - HKA#63003
