This lot includes five carved, wooden native american figures. 1) An 8 tall figure signed on the bottom, Death Fly Kachina by Lewis Hopi/Navajo. This figure represents the Death Fly, called Mastop in Hopi mythology, who accompanies the spirit of fertility, indicating the connections between fertility/life/rebirth and death. 2) A 9 tall figure, White Orge[sic] with an illegible signature on the bottom. The White Ogre, also called Wiharu by the Hopi people, helped to ensure that children behaved themselves. 3) A 8.5 tall Eagle Kachina signed Largo Navajo on the foot. Includes several white and dark-tipped turkey feathers as wings on the figure. The Eagle kachina is associated with air, freedom, and movement, and is closely related to one of the most important native ceremonial dances. 4) A 5 tall carving of a native warrior on horseback. His mount is a buckskin with white socks and red hand prints on its flanks. The rider is carrying a long spear and a bundle of arrows and is slumped over the saddle as if he is injured or sleeping. 5) A second 5 tall carving of a mounted figure, this time on an appaloosa with white socks. The rider is carrying a spear and arrows, and the bottom of this figurine is signed in pencil Robert Mann. A great collection of small art pieces with mythological and historical significance.
