The Story:
In 1879, James Ritty, a Dayton saloon-keeper, realized his bartenders were stealing from him. He developed a mechanical cash register dubbed "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier." Enter James Patterson, a coal-mine owner who bought Ritty's machine to use in his company stores. He was so impressed, Patterson bought the business in 1884 and renamed it the National Cash Register Company. A few of these historic cash registers can be found at the Museum of American Financial History in New York City. The gift shop has several original NCR machines on display.
Ritty was inspired to develop his mechanical cashier on a steamship trip to Europe when he noticed a mechanism that counted propeller revolutions. By 1911, Patterson had sold one million units of his mechanical cash registers.
