National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans Book Set (1834-1839). Four volumes. (Philadelphia, New York, London: Henry Perkins, Monson Bancroft, O. Rich, 1835, 1837, 1836, 1839), unpaginated, full polished black leather with ornate gilt bordering and decorative stamped binding on covers and spine, also with gilt lettering on the spine, 4to (7.25" x 11"). All edges gilt. Each volume illustrated with engraved portraits, accompanied by short biographies of illustrious American statesmen, military heroes, first ladies, physicians, lawyers, etc. Such notables as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Dolly Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Rush, William Henry Harrison, Robert Morris, Daniel Boone, and John Adams are included in this collection. Rare to find this four-volume set complete. The books are generally very good, with heavy foxing on text pages and plates, as usual with this particular set. Tissue guards on each plate have prevented foxing to the actual portraits. Previous owner's name in pen on each front paste down. The binding of the 1834 volume has separated completely at the spine, with the cover almost completely detached from the spine as well. Text intact. 1839 volume shows very slight separation of front hinge. The other volumes display tight binding, with some wear to the edges, hinges, and corners, but beautiful overall. Individual volumes from this set are rare, so this is a truly unique opportunity to acquire the complete set of these wonderful books in one place.
