Nathaniel P. Banks Autograph Note Signed.
Nathaniel P. Banks Autograph Note Signed. Signed: N.P. Banks, one page, 4" x 6", Waltham, Massachusetts, June 23, 1889. This note was written to a Miss Clara Stein, in response to her request for his autograph. It reads: "With much pleasure I comply with your request of May 4th 1889. It is no trespass on my time but a pleasure received not a favor granted.". Banks was a man of many stations; he served as a Governor of Massachusetts, Speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives, and a Union General in the Civil War. His illustrious career was somewhat overshadowed by accusations of unethical behavior during his stint as general and his name was involved in the Credit Mobilier scandal as well. While the report was never published his character was subject certain suspicions thereafter. The note is in fine condition; the letter has moderate toning from previous mounting and display; usual folds are present; mounting traces on corners.
