Born on the Fourth of July in Salem, Massachusetts, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) is most famous for his Romantic novels <I>The Scarlet Letter</B></I> (1850) and <I>The House of the Seven Gables </B></I>(1851), both of which have been filmed several times.
