Revolutionary War-dated Autograph Letter, one page both sides, 8.5 x 13, June 6, 1780. Letter to an unidentified general. In full: “On my way down I was attacked with a severe fever which confined me one day at [Washington] but finding myself a little better the next day I pushed to Town & immediately sent his Excellency the General’s letter with one from myself to the Treasury Board and next day received their answer copies of both, which I enclose you. I had scarcely finished my Letter to the Treasury board when my fever returned with great violence and has confined me to my Chamber and the most of my time to my bed ever since. I have not yet had an intermission. It is much abated this morning. I am not able to attend to business or make any remarks on their Letter, but be assured that I have the greatest anxiety to return to the army at this necessary time and that as soon as my head is sufficiently clear I shall do all in my power to get…of which you will please to advise his Excellency and deliver him the enclosed from the Treasure Board in answer to the one from him to them urging my speedy return.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered light toning, mounting remnant to left edge on reverse, some scattered light creasing, and writing showing through from opposing sides.
At the time of this letter, Greene was serving as Quartermaster General under George Washington, overseeing the army’s Quartermaster Corps. Still considered the most well-known person to hold the post, Greene retained the right to command troops in the field—an option he took around the time of sending this letter. In June 1780, Greene’s head was “sufficiently clear” and he was in command at the Battle of Springfield, and two months later he resigned the office of Quartermaster General after a long struggle with Congress over the interference in army administration by congressman and congressional appointees over how to supply the Continental Army. A rare and interesting piece from one of Washington’s most reliable men.
