Confederate general (1821–1877) who earned a reputation as the greatest cavalry officer of the Civil War. A subject of controversy even in his own lifetime, Forrest’s military legacy remains permanently clouded by his prewar career as a millionaire slave trader and, later, his role as first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Self-contained partial DS, signed “N. B. Forrest,” one page, 8 x 3.5, September 1, 1869. A guarantee for the payment of the principal and interest of a bond from the Selma, Marion, and Memphis Railroad Company, payable in gold coin. Matted and framed with two portraits of Forrest, to an overall size of 22.25 x 10.5. In fine condition, with light show-through from printing on reverse, and some scattered mild toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
