a portrait of Forrest in his later years; 7.5" x 9.25", mounted on cardstock, 8" x 10".

Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877) was a self-made and innovative cavalry and military leader in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Forrest first enlisted as a private in Tennessee, and he ended the war with the rank of Lieutenant General. He was known as a crude, violent man who acquired his fortune as a slave trader. Following the Civil War, Forrest opposed Reconstruction era policies, and it has been suggested that he became one of the leading figures in the establishment of the Ku Klux Klan.

Condition: Scattered soiling; top of print creased; archival tape on back of cardstock.
