Tunic
Nasca
100 B.C. - A.D. 250
Cotton and camelid fibers
Length 38 5/8 in. Width 35 5/8 in.

The plain weave cochineal red main body of the tunic is ornamented with an overall tie-dye pattern in lozenges alternating between the natural white fiber color and a now-pale buff. The longer borders are alike in a tightly woven subtle geometric striping, and the shorter borders are knitted. The neck slit is unbound. Considerable wear, especially at the neck and at one side where the arm would have rested, indicates that this tunic was well used in daily life in ancient Peru.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, 9 June 2003, lot 5124, p. 33
