Width 6 9/16 in.

This unusually large long-handled ceremonial dance wand topped with a round-eyed, well-toothed and large-mouthed slightly smiling face was used during trance-related dance ceremonies. Two large, serpent-headed elements project upward from the center of the forehead. Six serpent-headed hair units curl outward on either side of the face. A delicate, pointed chin develops downward into an unusually thin handle at the lower terminus of which swells a complex low relief unit replicating a handle. Other than losses at the lower end, which from their edges appear to be ancient, some smoothed fold creases are visible.

Provenance
Lawrence Witten Collection
David Bernstein, New York
