Nasca Bowl with Flaring Sides Polychrome ceramic
Bowl with Flaring Sides
Nasca
100 B.C.- A.D. 250
Polychrome ceramic
Diameter 9 1/4 in.

With an unslipped interior, the flaring low bowl has an even white slip on its exterior that bears two bands of design, the upper wider and more complex than the lower. Four outstretched deities "swim" around the upper with their tongues extended from whiskered mouths. Masks trailing streamers, all with strands of trophy-head hair, complete the upper body. The lower bodies are simplified and anthropomorphic. Below a dividing band hang identical plant-derived forms in varying color combinations. The overall condition is fair, with one large crack through the face of a deity and minute chips in the slip.

Provenance
John-Platt Collection (Daniel M.
