Nara Visa,NM - Quay County - c1902 - Town View Photograph :
View of a town with a train passing through it from right to left. The photo measures 7 x 5", with a 1/8" white border, and is mounted on 9 x 7" black cardstock backing. The contrast is high and the focus is sharp. The bottom left corner shows some wear, while foxing and several small spots are visible above the horizon line. No photographer listed. The town was established in 1902 after CRI & P R.R. built through Quay County to Tucumari. Named after the Nara Visa Creek, a tributary of the Canadian River, which was likely named after Spanish shepherd named "Narvis," who lived on the creek in the late 1800's (Ref: New Mexico Place Names, Pearce). While "Nara Visa N. Mexico" is hand printed on the reverse of the photo and the image includes several businesses, the location of the image is difficult to verify.
