Scarce broadside in French, one page, 12.75 x 15.5, June 10, 1808. An impressive broadside notifying local official that deserters and clergy obedient to Pope Pius VII have crossed the Pyrenees from France to Aragon, Spain, and “have refused to enlist amongst insurgents." Headed "The Prefect of the Department of Hautes-Pyrenees, Member of the Legion of Honor, to M. the Mayor of the Department," the text begins (translated): "I learn, Mr. Mayor, by several reports that have been made to me, that a large number of deserters and refractory of this department, have taken refuge in Aragon, have refused to enlist amongst insurgents of this Spanish province, and are returning to their homeland, braving all the perils and all the sorrows, rather than to be useful against it." The text concludes with the name of Jean-Pierre Chazal, who served as Prefect des Hautes-Pyrenees from 1802–1813; in 1810, he was made Baron d’Empire by Napoleon. In fine condition.
