Bold endorsement, “Bonaparte,” adding one word above his signature, on the left edge of a one-page, both sides, untranslated manuscript French Republic document, 1799. Napoleon commends a battalion head, Villaret Joyeuse, and according him the rank of Artillery Squad Head in recognition of his long and devoted service. Intersecting folds, a uniforms shade of light toning, and a rough left edge, otherwise fine condition. Around the time of this appointment, Napoleon had returned to France from Egypt and, amongst fear of a rebellion, was placed in charge of protecting the French legislative councils. Dispersing the coup, Napoleon was named one of three provisional Consuls to administer the government. A gorgeous document dated under the French Revolutionary Calendar, with “Frimaire” representing the third month of the autumn quarter—mid- to late-November through mid- to late-December. A lesser-seen form of Napoleon’s signature with great military content.
