Ink endorsement, “Have them paid, Np,” on the left side of a 8.25 x 9.75 manuscript document, in French, dated September 25, 1804, from General Drouot. The document reads, (translated): “The engineering commissioner spent f199.66 for repairs aimed at making the barracks at Linguelle ready to receive troops. He asks that the expense be covered. It is my privilege to beg your Majesty to let me know of His intentions; at first You said that this sum should be paid by contractors…who represent that the expenses are the result of stores being moved, that this move was ordered by the government etc, and that if they have to pay for the work done by the engineers’ corps…the government must reimburse those costs as well as all expenses caused by the move.” Grandly and massively suede matted and framed with a large color image of Napoleon on canvas, and a biographical plaque, to an overall size of 45 x 42. In fine condition, with a small spot of toning from an old label affixed at top left, a few stray ink marks, and a light shade of overall toning to page.
This unique endorsement came four months after Napoleon established a new French monarchy, in the process proclaiming himself France’s emperor and eventually crowning himself on December 2. Dating from a pivotal period in France’s history, this document also lays claim to a unique notation—the addition of the directive “Have them paid.” It is very unusual to find such handwritten instructions by Napoleon. Oversized.
