LS in French, signed “Nap,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 8.75, August 28, 1811. Interesting letter to his Minister of War, Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke, regarding military strategies for parts of his empire, in part: "I approve the project of the Engineering Committee for the pentagonal fort of the island of Goree…This fort will bear the name of Tromp. I grant the 100,000 [francs] requested for this year. This fort renders useless all the gun emplacements of Goedereskdiep. As for Springersdiep, I wish to know how big it is: can vessels of war enter it—in which case, would a battery be useful there? A mobile long-range battery of cannons and of guns of 12…would that no adequately fulfill the objective? The Goedereskdiep is the main passage that could be followed by enemy men-of-war, therefore my ships might need protection: the Tromp fort will perfectly fulfill this need." In fine condition.
