Napoleon Bonaparte Manuscript Decree Signed
Napoleon Bonaparte Manuscript Decree Signed “Bonaparte” as General in Chief on verso of a broadside, 8” x 12”. The printed broadside, in French, was issued in Cairo, Egypt, 28 prairial an 7 (June 16, 1799). Headed “Bonaparte,/Général en Chef,” General Bonaparte issues eight numbered articles concerning the farmers of Egyptian villages and the payment of taxes. He also orders that “this decree will be printed in French and Arabic.” The third article states the penalty if the farmers do not pay by 10 messidor (June 28th). In a manuscript correction on verso, Bonaparte orders the execution of the third article to be delayed until 30 messidor (July 18th). Bonaparte had invaded Egypt in 1798, arriving in Cairo on July 24, 1798. He left Egypt for Paris on August 23, 1799. Show-through from printed side but not materially affecting the bold, dark signature. A rare broadside unsigned, it is particularly desirable because of Napoleon Bonaparte's signed correction.
