Napoleon Bonaparte DS 1798
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Napoleon Bonaparte document signed ''Bonaparte'' from Cairo on 8 October 1798. On Republique Francaise letterhead, document is addressed to Poussielgue, the Director of Finance for the Army in Egypt; Napoleon signs an order to construct military barracks for the Cavalry, noting that some of the merchants will have to be expelled and the matter will be handled by the general in charge of construction. Two weeks after this document, the city of Cairo erupted into rebellion against the French, killing two of Napoleon's top commanders and murdering Frenchmen in the streets. Rather than retreating, Napoleon concentrated his forces in the city and personally ordered the transit of over 5,000 rebels into the Great Mosque, where he summarily killed them. To crush any further insurrection, he found guilty instigators of the revolt, imposed a hefty tax upon the city and posted a proclamation in all Egyptian cities that read, ''Stop founding your hopes on Ibrahim and Mourad, and put your trust in He who has empires in his discretion and who creates men.'' While Napoleon remained in Egypt, no further insurrection took place. Single page document measures 8.25'' x 12.5''. Uniform toning and a small hole next to the wax seal, not affecting text. Overall in very good condition with a bold signature.
