<B>Napier Ball Manuscript Draft,</B></I> 17 pp., various sizes averaging 4" x 13", February 18, 1859. An eyewitness account of the Napier Ball held at Washington, D.C.'s Willard Hotel. The farewell gala honored Francis Napier, Britain's departing ambassador to the United States. Nearly 2,000 dignitaries and their ladies attended, making it perhaps the most memorable social event of nineteenth century Washington. The manuscript presented here appears to be a draft for a society page article on the ball. Famous attendees, such as Jeff Davis and Sam Houston, are named. Clothing, music, and activities are described in detail. Included is an original 2.5" x 4.5" dance program card for the ball.
