Napa County,CA - No Date - La Joya Mine Photograph :
The mine was operated by the Lucky Strike Mining Co. Photograph measures 8 1/2”x6 1/2”, no matte, high contrast, and the focus is sharp. Minor wear on the corners and a small crease on the lower left. This is a crisp photo. There is a wood box lying on the ground at the center bottom of the photo. On the box, it reads Carnation Milk (exceptional clarity). No photographer identified. This is a vista shot of a mercury mine near Oat Hill. The Bureau of Mines Quicksilver Bulletin, no 335, tells us, The La Joya mine, some 6 miles west of Oakville in Napa County, is operating a 3x40 foot rotary kiln. One small cyclone collects the dust, the gases passing to the condenser pips of black sheet iron painted with an acid-proof paint…Thirty to forty tons per day are treated in this kiln.” Wine country topography can be seen in the background of the mine. Quicksilver, or mercury, mines were discovered in the hills northwest of Pope Valley in the early 1860s, near Calistoga. The photograph reads, “LUCKY STRIKE MINING Co., LA JOYA MINE, NAPA Co., CAL.” No. 2.
