Named U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, by Harpers Ferry, with bayonet, named to Henry M. Whittelsey, (1821-1873). During the American Civil War, Henry Whittelsey was listed as a Brevete Brig. General, which would make him 40 years old at the beginning of hostilities. Born in 1821 in Hartford, CT, he attended Yale Law School. He was Quartermaster for Michigan State Troopers and was Captain on the Staff of Brig. Gen. Alpheus Williams. He was Captain and Acting Chief Quartermaster for 20th Corps, later Colonel and Chief Quartermaster for the Army of Georgia, City Comptroller of Washington D.C. (1870-1871), and died August 8, 1873 in Washington D.C. Many of Whittelsey's personal records were gleaned from Congregational Church Records in Farmington, CT (pages 409-410). Rifle is .69 cal., with 42'' barrel, three iron bands, metal parts finished bright, detachable brass flash pan, lightly cartouched walnut stock, and U.S. marked steel buttplate. Lockplate marked ''Harpers Ferry 1839'' with ''(Federal eagle)/U.S.''; upper tang dated 1835. Ramrod is present. Condition is about fine with moderate carbon toning to bright surfaces and mild erosion to sideplate bearing inscription. Oval cartouche is mostly clear and legible behind sideplate. Stock with oil darkening and minor nicks and scuffs; small loss behind hammer and to left side of upper tang. Bayonet with moderate overall patination and is marked at base of blade ''US/SM/CO''. Action is good and functioning, bore with even toning. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (Antique)
