Named M1852 Naval Officer's Presentation Sword by Horstmann, Philadelphia. An extremely well executed naval officer's sword from the post-Civil War era. This high-grade sword has beautifully detailed raised design on the brass mounts and fittings. The blade is .75" wide and is 28.5" long with an overall length of 34.5". The hilt is brass and the white sharkskin, wire-wrapped grips are heavily pebbled. The leather throat washer is still present. The "Horstmann, Philadelphia" manufacturer's mark appears at the base of the blade with the Star of David proof mark on the obverse. Both sides of the blade are richly etched with floral, nautical, and military themes. Etched near the base of the blade is the officer's name - "Leonard N. Linsley" with his initials "LNL" engraved on the top brass mount near the throat of the scabbard. Most importantly is a presentation inscription on the flat of the cross guard reading "Presented by the Petty Officers of the Engineer Force U.S.S. Ohio". This probably refers to the third U.S.S. Ohio, a battleship of the Maine Class, pre-Dreadnought, commissioned in 1904. The overall condition of the sword is superb. The leather on the scabbard is lightly aged, and the brass fittings are bright. The blade exhibits signs of old rust pitting which has taken off portions of the plating. However, this is a sword of collector grade quality.

Shipping: Large Collectibles (view shipping information)
