Naive folk art powder horn, French & Indian War, Crown Point, 1761, by Pvt. Joseph Loomis of Windsor, CT. This particular powder horn is charming naïve, primitive folk art, showing objects of concern to the private soldier: quaint little mermaids, scale (of justice/ judgment), 2 serpents (devil), each with forked tongue, sugar tongs (for making punch), sloop, 3 quaint little mermaids, imaginary human-faced bird with elaborate head plumage (reminiscent of the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute), a perturbed caterpillar, key (Masonic?), smoking pipe, and unknown “fishing lure” or cod-jig. Loomis was barely literate. Inscription is “CamP at josPh CrownPoint OCtoberthe 17 josPh Lomis.” In a later hand, a very light and tiny name and date “1812” are repeated three times, all barely visible. 12 inches maximum chord length. Base plug restored without disturbing the old corroded iron tacks that held the original one. Minor loss to rim of horn. Single transverse hole drilled in spout, doubtless for a now-missing suspension ring. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
