Nails and Wood From John C. Calhoun's Home
Nails and Wood From John C. Calhoun's Home. Two 19th century cut nails, each approximately 3" long, mounted with copper straps to a 3.5" x 6.5" piece of beveled pine. A 20th century note on the wood's underside reads: "To - Mr. & Mrs. Smithwick - wood & hand made nails from Fort Hill, home of John C. Calhoun - Thank you again for the note & picture of Mr. Calhoun. Mrs. Carroll Brannon". A few minor dings to the wood; white paint still on the heads of the nails. Fort Hill, a sprawling mansion in Clemson, South Carolina, was Calhoun's home from 1825 until his death in 1850. A strong proponent of States Rights and slavery, Calhoun articulated the ideology of Southern ruling class at large.
