Group of three items associated with Nadar and his 'Societe d'Encouragement de la Locomotion Aérienne au moyen du plus lourd que l'air [Society of Encouragement of Aerial Locomotion by means of heavier than air],' including: an original 11 x 17 leaflet containing Nadar's first communication to French and foreign newspapers about the society's July 30, 1863, meeting to demonstrate the possibility of 'heavier-than-air' flight, printed in Paris by J. Claye; an original 6 x 4.5 invitation issued by Nadar for the 1863 meeting, promising that nine heavier-than-air machines would be on display; and the first report of the society by Gabriel de la Landelle, 32 pages, 5.25 x 8.25, published in Paris in 1865. In overall very good to fine condition, with old mounting remnants on the back of the leaflet. Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820–1910), known by the pseudonym Nadar, was a French photographer, caricaturist, journalist, novelist, balloonist, and proponent of manned flight, who in 1864 founded the 'Societe d'Encouragement de la Locomotion Aérienne' with Gabriel de la Landelle. Provenance: Collection of Charles Dollfus (1893–1981), curator of the Air Museum, Meudon, Paris.
