c1870-An advertising color card for the Clipper Ship "E. Southard," by "Coleman`s California Line for San Francisco". Listed as the "New and Elegant, strictly A1, Clipper Ship." The Commander is listed as "Howes". The litho printer for this 6.5" x 4.1" card is illegible, although it is estimated that Nesbitt & Co. of New York was the printer. The vignette is of an elegant woman. These printed cards were done on enameled cardstock, sometimes with 5-7 color overprints. They were typically done to drum up business for the clipper line. The "E. Southard" was likely a small clipper (this is noted on the card), and not much information is available via the normal sources. This card is in excellent condition, with slight fading of some of the green text. A fine piece of history.
In 1849 William Tell Coleman went to California and eventually settled in San Francisco, where he engaged in the shipping and commission business. Coleman was a leading figure in both the 1851 and 1856 Committees of Vigilance, which usurped civic power in order to drive out the Democratic Party machine and ostensibly to establish law and order.
