Lot of 2. 1. Volume XXVI, No. 653, New York edition for 11 September 1889. Drawn by Dalrymple, who was a regular contributor to the magazine. This illustration depicts a Catholic Priest threatening a woman and her children with excommunication if her children do not enroll in parochial school. American Catholics started their own school system in the U. S. in the 1830s because the curriculum developed earlier in the century covertly promoted Protestant values in the public school systems. Catholic children were picked on by Protestant children, so creating the parochial school system was a way the church could protect Catholic children from harm as well as inculcate its belief system into its youth. The cartoon suggests that in 1889 the priests were now the ones who were picking on their own believers if they did not attend parochial school. The caption says in part, “No Freedom for Catholic Parents in a Free Country.” Measures 10.50” by 14.” Yellowing around the edges. One small tear in the upper left top edge. Corners are excellent. 2. Volume XXVI, No. 661, New York edition for 6 November 1889. Drawn by C. J. Taylor, who was a popular freelance illustrator of the era. This cover depicts a man dressed in Muslim garb going into a Mosque. The name on the hat identifies him as D. B. Hill, a presidential hopeful. David Bennett Hill was the 29th governor of New York State. The shoes he discarded on his way in are named “Trickery” and “Peanut Politics.” A great early example how Americans portrayed Muslims. Measures 10.50” by 14.” In very good condition. Both illustrations have write-ups on the back explaining the cartoons.
