This is a Remington 1861 New Army cap and ball revolver in .44 caliber. The barrel measures 8" with an over-all length of 13". Although the gun has been engraved with beautiful scroll work on its nickel finish, this is not just a decorative piece, it has been fired. The pistol shows some holster wear as well as wear around the hammer and nipples. The action is very tight and the bore is sharp, with a few scratches evident a quarter of the way down from the muzzle. The serial number is 48924 and is on both the underside of the barrel and under the butt frame. This would indicate a c1860s date. This particular model was made from 1863-1875 and was heartily endorsed by Buffalo Bill Cody. The grips are carved ivory and show a relief of an American eagle on one side and the California State Seal on the other. There are cracks and scratches on both grips. The design appears to signify that this was once owned by a prominent California personality. It doesn’t appear to be a presentation piece, but it is a fine example of the gun engraver’s art. This is a nice piece that’s still in working order. HKA#62368
